Dealing with the Dust Bunnies

Life is made up of moments. Some moments may be good, wonderful even, and some may be memorable. Some moments may bring back memories of good times and loving relationships, or sorrow and grief. Yet in all those moments that we experienced and walked through, we still have forgotten moments, or rather moments we would like to forget. The embarrassing moments, the shameful moments, the angry and ill- mannered moments. The moments of what you should have or shouldn’t have said, did or shouldn’t have done. The moments we would much rather sweep under the rug. Out of sight out of mind. It’s easier to not deal with these moments when they are not right in front of us. It is easier to ignore them when they are not seen, not heard, not a part of our daily life. We aren’t affected by any of these moments that we have swept under the rug…are we?

What about in the moments when your friend admits that they have wronged you and asks for your forgiveness? Is there not a niggle inside you for a forgiveness you have yet to ask for? Or the moments where you hear of someone facing consequences over an action that was wrong and it turns out they were innocent and that you know that you had judged them for it? Are there things in your life that you have yet to face judgement over?

Or the moment when you find yourself losing your patience or temper at a family member over something that they had put off dealing with until the eleventh hour and panic sets in. Are there not things that you have put off dealing with until absolutely necessary?

We all stuff up, mess up and screw up many of the precious moments God has blessed us with. Not dealing with the moments that are hard, messy, and difficult changes how we walk this journey. What we choose not to deal with God won’t throw in our faces, but the longer they lie there under the rug the more space they take up in our hearts and minds. God is waiting to fill those places with more of Him if only we would ask for His help with dealing with those moments we don’t want to face. Ask Him to reveal them to you and to help you through them. God’s ways are higher than our ways and He can guide you through these moments. And, let’s face it, He always knows what is under the rug.

We are made in the image of God, and we all have the moments of man. Yet God knows us and still He loves us. Let’s lift the rug on the moments we keep in the dark and let God light bring them into the light so we can give them to Him and leave them at His feet. We have so many more moments that God has yet to reveal to us so let’s not drag yesterday into today and the today’s yet to come.

For Discussion:

What things do you sweep under the rug? Why do you think that you do it? What can we do about the stuff under the rug?

What do you think God would want us to do?

What ways do you think our lives might change if we dealt with the ‘stuff’ we hide under the rug instead of hiding it in the dark and avoiding it?

Are you prepared to lift up your rug and start dealing with what is under there? God is waiting, we just need to ask.

Lastly:

You have searched me, Lord, and you know me

You know when I sit and when I rise;

You perceive my thoughts from afar

You discern my going out and my lying down,

You are familiar with all my ways.

Psalm 139:1-3
